When our board decided to broaden our mission to focus on working with Latino communities across Jefferson County, we knew the challenges that could come from those who endeavor to villainize and scare Latino community members.

With the election in the rear view mirror, we are intently focused on working with Latino community members in Jefferson County to further our collective mission to improve education, economic opportunities, and civic engagement. As we talk to Latino community members there are escalating fears of discrimination, violence, and discrimination.

In this current environment, here are the actions we are taking to ensure the safety of our Latino community members:

  • Bringing community partners together: Later this month, we are bringing together community partners that work with Jeffco Latino communities to strategize and plan efforts to prepare for potential actions of the new administration. For a start, we want to work with partners to offer a Know Your Rights training for immigrant communities in Jefferson County.
  • Providing safe places to connect and learn: In December, we will start organizing weekly spaces for Latino community members to build relationships and learn together. We will also plan another weekly space, with free childcare provided by Casitas Pin Pon Coop, so that parents can drop off their younger children while they run errands or attend appointments.
  • Planning cultural events with our Latino communities: The Día de los Muertos event in October was very successful and community members want to see more events like this that celebrate Mexican, Central American, and South American cultures. We have already started planning our El Día del Niño celebration for Saturday, April 26.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Spread the word: As we broaden our focus to Jefferson County, our goal is to broaden our network. Encourage members of the Latino community that you know to follow us on social media (Facebook and Instagram). Share about our work with people who are interested in supporting Latino communities through this tough season. We can connect them with partners who are doing incredible work in Jefferson County.
  • Donate to support these efforts: Your financial donations support our work with Latino communities in Jefferson County. Currently, Colorado Gives Foundation is matching new recurring monthly donations up to $100. As we look to Colorado Gives Day on December 10, we will also be sharing more information on the organizations doing great work with Latino communities in Jefferson County.

Regardless of what happens at the federal level, we are committed to working with Latino communities in Jefferson County to ensure their safety and access to opportunities to thrive. Together we can ensure access to the American Dream for Latino communities!
