Today we toured the first day of summer classes for the Jeffco Summer of Early Literacy program at Molholm Elementary. This excellent program is in its third year and has already seen amazing results in K-3rd grade literacy rates. Over 600 students are signed up for the program that runs June 12-July 25.
The Jeffco Summer of Early Literacy program is organized by the Jeffco Schools Foundation and is in six Jeffco elementary schools this summer. Three of the schools, Edgewater, Molholm and Stevens, are in the Jefferson Articulation Area where we focus our energy.
Each day students participate in the same reading and writing activities that they do during the school year. Class sizes are no more than 15 students and teachers are licensed and trained. Students also participate in field trips and family nights. Parents commit to engage in two hours each week in family literacy activities like reading together.
To be eligible for the program, students must be enrolled in one of the schools participating in the program and be entering K-3rd grade. The program is free to all eligible children and breakfast and lunch is providing through the summer meal program.
We are excited for how this program will continue to improve 3rd grade literacy rates in the Jefferson area. Our hope is that the program will be offered next summer at the remaining elementary school in our area, Lumberg Elementary.
