Thanks to a grant from Jeffco Open Space Foundation, we are starting a new program this summer to connect Jeffco Latino youth with outdoor spaces in Jefferson County.
The Big Idea
This new program would connect Latino youth to the outdoors through hiking in Jefferson County parks and open spaces. Our goal is to combine learning about nature, mental health, and personal development while hiking Jeffco’s trails together.
Focus Schools
Our goal is to design hiking groups that would pair Latino students from Jeffco middle and high schools with bilingual educators and staff from their school. Our focus schools will be:
- Alameda Jr/Sr High School
- Arvada High School
- North Arvada Middle School
- Jefferson Jr/Sr High School
- Creighton Middle School
- Lakewood High School
- Pomona Jr/Sr High School
- Everitt Middle School
- Wheat Ridge High School
- Foster K-8
Program Staff
We are looking to hire bilingual educators or school staff from each of these schools who would lead the hikes in partnership with Edgewater Collective staff. Educators and staff would be paid $35 an hour including planning time.
Hikes
Each hike would have 8-10 students and three adult staff members. These 2-3 hour hikes would be in Jefferson County parks and open spaces at times that work best for the staff and students. Transportation, snacks, and supplies would be provided by Edgewater Collective. The program would start in June and run through August.
