In the wake of the election, reports of racist incidents are popping up across the United States. Trump’s racist and derogatory statements against women, minorities and immigrants create fear among many. On the Wednesday morning after the election, there were tears and a sense of fear among children in our local schools. Our local schools are over 80% Latino and many of these students are immigrants. Many of these children and families are afraid of what a Trump presidency will be like given his comments against immigrants and minorities.

In light of the national mood of fear and divisiveness, we are motivated even more to be an organization that values the diversity of our Edgewater community. We are committed to stand up for every person in this community regardless of race, documentation status or gender. We are committed to creating spaces where both Clinton and Trump supporters are heard and understood.

Here is our value statement regarding the value of diversity and inclusion that we have posted on our website:

We are a common good organization which strives to be inclusive of all and value the beauty of diversity.

We welcome all who want to see a thriving Edgewater. It is our hope to offer equal opportunity to all races, ethnicities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, gender identifications, documentation status, abilities, incomes, marital statuses and ages in all levels of staff and governance.

For those that are fearful, you are not alone. We stand with you.

A thriving Edgewater is one in which ALL feel heard, valued and safe.
